When drones started showing up in our air space, there was great concern by the FAA over safety. Accidents involving mid-air collisions with planes, property and people posed increasing risks. The FAA, under pressure from drone manufactures and hobbyists, created an exemption to allow the use of drones. The problem is that most operators under that exemption were not trained in safety and FAA air space regulations. The FAA, in 2016, announced new regulations for commercial drone operation for the safety and proper usage of drones. While it is common for other drone operators to point to their Section 333 Exemption from the FAA, which is only a temporary use exemption, Granite Drone employs fully licensed FAA pilots who also hold Part 107 UAS Certification, which shows our dedication and commitment to professionalism, flight safety and quality. Section 333 exemptions were intended to “provide a pathway for civil operators who desire safe and legal entry” into the National Airspace System, however, an exemption does not imply proper training, if any, knowledge or ability to meet a client’s needs. Hiring someone not certified may create liability issues for both the drone operator as well as the client.
